While Rembrandt and Jan Six were never social equals—Six was a wealthy lawyer became mayor of Amsterdam in his seventies—the painter knew his patron well enough confidently to portray him in a remarkably casual pose seen in the 1654 portrait (right), still owned by that family in the form of a foundation chaired by the sitter's direct descendant, Jonkheer Jan Six van Hillegom.
